Whether you want to decorate your walls with paintings, photographs, posters or wall sculptures, it's all possible without creating holes. Rather than using a hammer and nails, opt for removable adhesive hooks that stick to the wall. Available in a variety of sizes, the hooks are easily removed by pulling down on a tab when you want to release them from the wall. For lighter items, use tacky putty. Simply pinch off a piece, roll it between your hands to create a ball and stick it on the wall. Items like posters adhere easily to this pressure-sensitive material.
While you may feel limited initially when you realize that wall lamps and sconces are no longer options, there are plenty of other ways to add interesting lighting to your home. Choose Tiffany-style lamps to set on tabletops for an old-fashioned look, an assortment of candle arrangements placed in strategic locations or floor lamps such as those with three-way or halogen bulbs. Choose paper lamps in the Japanese tradition that rest on the floor, a stand or a tabletop.
The sooner you realize you're not limited to hanging wall art on the wall, the more quickly you'll be able to decorate your place. Rest framed images on top of a fireplace mantel, rather than hanging them. Do the same on tabletops or along the edge of the floor as well. Situate the frames at an angle with the top resting on the wall, and eliminate the need for holes in the wall altogether. Alternatively, purchase an easel or two. Choose a full-size artist's easel or a smaller tabletop version. Situate your works of art on the easel and display them proudly.
If you think that vinyl wall or window clings are for holidays only, think again. You can get vinyl wall decor in a variety of colors and patterns. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to maximize the sticking power of the vinyl cutouts, and peel them from the wall without damage when you want to change your decor. Alternatively, drape fabric on your walls for a warm, cozy look. Use a light and airy fabric like organza to create an accent around a window or doorway, or cover the wall above your bed with something sensuous like velvet, leopard print or faux suede. Drape the fabric on removable adhesive hooks, and change it as the mood suits you.
