How to Design Curved Steel Staircases

Curved staircases are an architectural element where design and art meet. Steel staircases are appropriate for use indoors and out, and allow you to save floor space as you connect floors. You can also use curved staircases to reach balconies, attics, decks or lofts. When you design your own curved steel staircase, you can customize the angle and radius twist to make sure you get the look you want. Such staircases can range from those with a gentle, sloping curve to those that incorporate spiral-like features.

Take into consideration the height between the finished floors, or platforms, that the stairs will connect because this will help determine the number of treads and risers you will need, as well as impact the degree of the curve. For example, if you plan to use a spiral staircase in this space, it will turn 240 degrees. If the height between the finished floors is between 76.5 and 85.5 inches, you will need eight treads and nine risers. If the distance between the platforms is greater than 85.5 inches, you will need to add an extra tread and riser for each additional 9.5 inches in height, and degree in turn will increase by 30 degrees if you are installing a spiral staircase.

Determine the amount of space you have in the room so you can calculate the diameter of the staircase. If you are adding a curved staircase to a large foyer, you may have enough space for the stairs to form a wide curve. In smaller spaces, however, you will use a staircase that forms a tighter curve. The length of the treads you use can also affect the diameter of a curved staircase.

Choose the type of curve you want for the steel staircase. Different types of staircases include those whose treads wrap or radiate around a central support pole. A curved staircase can be freestanding, curve downward and have an open stringer-like appearance. A staircase with an elliptical configuration does not have the sharper curves of a spiral staircase. Instead, the staircase looks more like a coil on a sprint that is stretched.

Design the treads, which on a curved steel staircase can be smooth or have grit paint for extra traction. On this type of staircase, the treads are generally angled on one end and resemble a wedge shape. If you prefer to use treads that are more decorative than solid steel, you can order them with cutout filigree patterns. If you choose to use wooden treads, you can continue the steel look by using angled tread frames made from steel. When designing the treads, use a size long enough to help ensure the safety of those climbing the stairs. Stair treads that are too narrow can make it difficult for you to get a good footing as you climb the steps.

Design the railing and baluster. A railing is essential to help ensure the safety of those in your home, particularly on narrow staircases. You can design a railing made from steel, glass, wood, decorative handmade forging or wrought iron. In addition, you can choose balusters made from the same materials as the railing or aluminum, stone or glass. According to the website for Winstaco, a stairmaker in Europe, curved stairs look good with a combination of two materials. On curved staircases, the spindles are generally a round shape, but you can choose a rectangular or square shape. You can also choose a conical shape for the spindles, meaning the rail is wider at either end. Winstaco recommends using a wooden handrail that’s about 60 millimeters round for a curved staircase, because it provides a warmer feel, but you can also make it from stainless steel.
