Creative Ways to Cover a Storage Cutout in a Wall

A hole in the wall can serve a number of useful purposes. You can hide valuables and cash in a cutout covered creatively so that no burglar would consider looking there. A wall cutout can be a place to store seldom-used items such as knickknacks you like to switch out occasionally. Wall cutouts can be as small as a few inches in diameter or large enough to walk into. The primary goal is to hide the cutout so that it looks natural in the room while keeping it accessible.
  1. Art

    • Framed artwork is a commonly used item for covering storage cutouts. Instead of hanging a store-bought piece of art, create your own collage. You can get your kids involved with book jackets, souvenirs from family trips, holiday scenes and school-related projects as the basis for a revolving collage. Use poster board that’s big enough to cover the hole and attach various themed pictures, maps or drawings with glue. Glue collage pieces to a piece of fabric or purchase a corkboard large enough to cover the space and attach changing collage art with thumbtacks.

    Wheels

    • Bookcases, entertainment centers and freestanding cupboards easily convert into mobile pieces of furniture with casters. Attach casters to the four corners of a cabinet that completely covers the storage space. Casters come in a variety of sizes and colors that your furniture can rest on unobtrusively. Attach locking casters to the front for easy conversion. The locks help keep the furniture in place and easily unlock when you need to move it to get into your storage space.

    Blinds

    • Wooden slat blinds, Roman shades and drapes can hide a storage cutout, making it appear to be just another window. Blinds or window treatments are especially useful for storage cutouts that are at the same level as the windows in the room. Attach curtain rods or blind attachments over the top of the cutout and use the same window treatments as you have on the other windows in the room. Shades and blinds are ideal if you access your cutout often or if you prefer to leave the cutout open at times to display the items stored inside.

    Rugs

    • Rugs don’t have to lie just on the floor. If you have an especially beautiful or antique rug that you want to display and conserve at the same time, hanging it over your storage cutout provides an ideal and creative solution. Area rugs that match the rugs on the floor also can provide creative accents in a room that sports a secret wall cutout. Hand-sew Velcro to the back of your rug and attach the matching side to the wall with the adhesive that comes installed on the back. Press the edge of the rug evenly over the Velcro. The rug easily pulls away when you need to get into the cutout without having to bother with nails, screws or hangers.
