How to Convert the Space Under the Stairs Into an Office

The cozy nook under a staircase is a natural spot to increase usable floorspace without making physical additions to your home. Customize a home office with equipment and furnishings to best accommodate your specific work needs within the available space. In addition, select office items to suit your preferred decorating style.
  1. Think About It

    • Take a good look at the area underneath the stairs to get a general idea of the usable space. Stretch a tape measure in the space under the stairwell, to determine more precise dimensions -- width, length, depth, height -- for your new office. Exact measurements help narrow your options for a desk, file cabinets and other furnishings. Think about the type of work you intend to do in your home office and the electronic equipment such as computers, phones, printers and fax machines that can best meet those work needs.

    Create the Cockpit

    • Design an office cockpit underneath the stairs with a U- or L-shaped layout. Place office equipment and work-related tools within arm's reach, you can move from task to task with minimal effort. For example, if the majority of your work entails computer-based tasks, situate your desk against the back wall of the staircase nook, topped with your computer or laptop. Flank the desk with file cabinets. For paper-related work requiring an open desk area, scoot an L-shaped desk into the corner to allow ample desktop space for shuffling and reviewing work papers.

    Relieve the Stress

    • Avoid the risk of hurting your back or developing a repetitive-strain injury by being sensitive to ergonomic factors. Select an adjustable office chair that easily swivels, has height and seat settings and provides lumbar support. The ideal office desk depends on your height, the equipment and tools you use, and your daily tasks. Because the area underneath a stairwell lacks natural light, furnish your office with a variety of task lights, such as a desk lamp and table or floor lamps, to avoid eye strain.

    Keep It Personal

    • If you prefer contemporary style with small color bursts, select a black or white desk, file cabinet and storage shelves with clean, straight lines. Top your desk with a silver vase of colorful flowers and your favorite black-and-white photograph encased in a simple black frame.
