How to Decorate a Yuppie Room

"Yuppie" is a slang term that technically means "young urban professional." Yuppie was a phrase that was coined in the '80s to describe someone born between 1946 and 1964 who made over $40,000 a year and who behaved in ways characterized by consumerism. Allegedly, the 1987 crash of the stock market signified the end of the yuppie era. However, according to Jeff Gordinier of "Details" magazine, the yuppie still exists as a consumptive societal creature, characterized by the purchase of luxury goods. If you need to decorate a room in yuppie style for a film, play or just because, it will be easy to achieve, if you have a big budget.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the walls in an understated, minimalist color that exudes a sense of luxury and has a strong texture. Colors like ecru, champagne or shale are all wise choices.

    • 2

Purchase furniture sets from well-crafted home furnishing stores like Ethan Allen, Pottery Barn or Crate and Barrel. These stores feature contemporary or traditional pieces at upmarket prices that yuppies can afford. Their furniture pieces are also easy to mix and match, making them user-friendly to yuppies untrained in design.

    • 3

Purchase linens, drapes and carpeting for the room from upscale designers like Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein or Armani. Stick to colors like blue, black, gray and neutral tones for easy mixing and matching.

    • 4

Visit antique shops to purchase the odd antique that you can decorate your room with, creating a conversation piece. For example, items like a gramophone or an old typewriter are suitable.

    • 5

Install recessed lighting to give the room a rich glow. Place a high-end MP3 player speaker set on a nearby table to serenade the room with music.
