How to Decorate Bathroom Maple Cabinets

Maple is a strong, durable wood that has played a big role in floors and cabinetry for generations. Maple has a distinctive sheen, comes in an array of shades and has a tight grain. If you have maple cabinets in your bathroom, your bathroom is blessed with traditional cabinetry that bears a classic look. However, certain shades of maple can look a bit plain. Think of that plainness as a blank canvas for you to decorate them.

Instructions

    • 1

Dampen a sponge and put a dime-size amount of dye on the center of it. Rub the sides of the sponge around to distribute the dye well. Wipe down the exterior of the cabinets with the sponge. Allow them to air-dry.

    • 2

Examine your cabinet doors. Decide where you want the decorative stencils to go.

    • 3

Attach a piece of 80-grit sandpaper to the bottom of an electric sander. Rub the electric sander around the edges or centers of the cabinet doors, wherever you want your stencils to go.

    • 4

Wipe off these areas with a tack cloth, removing the dust from sanding. Tape your stencils to the designated areas with painter's tape.

    • 5

Dip your foam brush in shellac and apply a light coat of shellac inside the stencil to ensure that the wood absorbs the stain evenly. Allow it to dry overnight.

    • 6

Dip your foam brush in a deep-colored wood stain and stain in the stencil design. Allow it to soak for 20 minutes, then wipe it off with a rag. Repeat three times. Allow the stencils to dry overnight.

    • 7

Cover the entire cabinets with a light coat of clear polyurethane the next morning, applied by a 3-inch nylon brush. Allow 24 hours drying time.

    • 8

Unscrew the cabinet knobs or pulls with a screwdriver and install new, more decorative ones.
