How to Paint Particle Board Cupboards

Particleboard, also known as chipboard, refers to a material used to construct bookshelves, cupboards and drawer chests. The material consists of many pieces of wood chips and shavings pressed together. While this material is cost effective, pieces of furniture made from particleboard usually exude a cheap appearance. For example, if you have particleboard cupboards in your kitchen, they can easily make your entire kitchen look shoddy, since cupboards take up so much space in this room. However, painting the particleboard can help to mask this appearance.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a drop cloth over your countertops. Unscrew all the cabinet hardware and lay the cabinet doors on top of the drop cloth.

    • 2

Combine 1/4 cup trisodium phosphate with 1 gallon water in a bucket. Put on rubber gloves

and dip a sponge in the mixture. Wipe down the cupboards and cupboard doors. Since particleboard is so porous, you'll have to let them dry overnight.

    • 3

Pour your latex primer into a paint roller pan and apply a light coat of primer to all the cupboard doors. Allow it to dry for four hours and apply a second coat. Apply a third and fourth coat as well, allowing each coat to dry for at least four hours before applying the next one.

Pour latex paint into a clean paint roller pan and apply a light coat of paint to your cupboards and cupboard doors. Allow it to dry overnight and then apply a second coat, allowing this paint to dry for 12 to 24 hours before you re-hang your cupboard doors.
