How to Decorate With Brown Moulding

Moldings are like the sprinkles on a frosted cake: They provide a charming decorative detail that helps complete the finished look. Moldings are small architectural features that line the floors and ceilings of room, removing sharp angles and corners and adding a refined embellishment. Brown molding is a world apart from white molding, which blends seamlessly into a room. Instead, brown molding is robust and has a strong presence, adding to the sense of elegance in a room.

Instructions

Select a shade of brown that matches the tone of the dominant pieces of furniture in the room. For example, if you have a lot of golden oak brown tables and chairs, molding in a matching color is suitable. Alternatively, if you have a lot of chocolate brown leather furniture in the room, select brown molding in a paint color that matches the shade of furniture.

Walk around the room where the brown molding will go and describe the decorative style in one word. Now that you've select your color of molding, your style of molding should reflect the decorative style in the room. For example, if your room is rustic, a comparable country-style molding is appropriate, whereas an ornate, Victorian-era molding wouldn't be.

Walk around the room and determine whether you want just ceiling molding or floor molding as well. While ceiling molding is a decorative essential, a matching floor molding is desirable only if you don't have a lot of furniture in the room, particularly against the walls, where it would just conceal the molding.

Paint or wallpaper the walls a light color. Since browns tend to be darker, even the paste shades, you will want the molding to stand out from the rest of the walls. It won't if the walls have dark colors. Light colors create a suitable contrast.
