Lighting Suggestions for a Stair Landing

Lighting a room is a matter of both function and aesthetics, and it is no different for the landing of a staircase. The addition of stairs to a dark environment makes a staircase landing a potentially hazardous place. Lighting it makes it safe and can add to the overall interior décor.
  1. Night Lights

    • Not just for children's rooms, night lights are an inexpensive and practical option for lighting the landing of a staircase. Select a unit from a general merchandise store or opt for a more decorative version to blend in with your décor.

    Wall Lights

    • Install wall lights or sconces to illuminate a staircase landing. To further customize functionality, change out a standard switch for a dimmer to control light intensity. The bulbs for wall lights and sconces are available in greater wattage than night lights, therefore casting more light on the area.

    Ceiling Lights

    • A simple ceiling light is also an effective and economical solution to lighting a staircase landing. Use a fixture similar to the type used in closets for a closed-in, less formal staircase, or choose a pendant-type or more decorative fixture for a formal, more open staircase. As with wall lights and sconces, consider installing a dimmer to control light intensity.

    Other Options and Considerations

    • If space allows, house a small table in the landing of the staircase and place a lamp on top. Be sure that the furniture does not obstruct walking space and create a safety hazard. If decorative lights are less of a concern, floor-level lighting is also an effective way to light a staircase landing. Because staircase lights are often left on for extended periods of time, choose low-energy bulbs. If the staircase lighting is visible from the first floor, consider coordinating the style with lights in the downstairs area. Be sure to place a switch at both the top and bottom of the staircase for easy access and safety.
