How Do I Professionally Make a Room Border?

Adding a border around a room in your home might be just what you need to pull together the color or decorating theme or to create a truly professional looking finish for the room. While you can simply put up a premade wallpaper border, you also have the option of making the border yourself using acrylic paints. A painted border can have a more professional appearance and will mean more since you created it yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a tape measure to find the right height for your room border. Also, decide how thick you want the border to be.

    • 2

Snap chalk lines along the top and bottom of the border to ensure the lines are straight and even.

    • 3

Add painter's tape all along the top and bottom edge of the border for a neat, professional finish.

    • 4

Create the border pattern stencil from a mylar sheet. Draw or trace the design on the stencil with marker and remove the design with a craft knife.

    • 5

Tape the border pattern stencil along the first length of the border with masking tape.

    • 6

Fill in the spaces of the stencil with acrylic paints using flat craft paintbrushes. You can also tap your brush on the design, which is called stippling the design, or you can move the brush in more of a swirled fashion. Using a dry-brush technique, running the loaded brush tip over a piece of paper towel until it is almost dry, will prevent the paint from leaking behind the stencil. For another look, you can use a paint sponge to dab the color onto the wall. Apply several thin layers of paint for the best outcome.

    • 7

Remove the stencil and place it over the next length of wall. Repeat the pattern with the same colors. Continue until you've completed the professional border.

    • 8

Pull off the lengths of painter's tape from the top and bottom edge of the border.
