Themes for Decorating College Bedrooms

College dorms are limited in space, and the space provided is fairly public, limiting personal expression of taste in decor. College bedrooms, however, offer students an area they can express themselves more decoratively. When choosing a theme for decorating your college bedroom, consider the image you want to project with the passions you hold and the tastes you have.
  1. Academic Ace

    • You aced the entrance exams and will graduate before your peers most likely, so decorate your room to reflect your commitment to all things academic. Plaster the walls with fake library bookshelf wallpaper. Choose furniture that lends itself to studying instead of lounging and add lots of desk lights when burning the midnight oil. Your friends will get the message and give you your space. Don't forget the basket of snacks to keep you going when you don't have time for dinner.

    Major Influence

    • You're majoring in art and you long to make it to the big screen someday, so start now by designing your college bedroom into your own academy award show. Use the same colors seen on the red carpet: gold, black, white and red. Dress up your black iron poster bed with gold lame' sheers and gold satin sheets. Don't forget the red rug beneath the white casting couch. Gold flower vases containing red roses will do for now in place of future gold statues, but a gold star on the door bearing your name is still required. )

    Sports Star

    • You're in college because you won a scholarship for your outstanding sports ability. Play that up by decorating your college bedroom with the team colors and memorabilia. Showcase all those sport statues you've won over the years in a bed headboard. Create a picture collage coffee table, exhibiting photos of you and your friends in different game-winning or scoring moments. Use old uniforms, gloves, rackets or hoops for wall decor. Add an alarm clock that sounds like your coach to get you moving in the early morning hours.

    Network It

    • An undeclared major coupled with a love of and interest in people makes you the college socialite. Your college bedroom reflects that leaning, with lots of comfortable seating -- for drop-in visitors -- and a little pomp and circumstance. Your minimalist room decor doesn't get in the way of space, with your bed doubling as extra seating, and coffee and end tables made of sturdy seat materials too. Your room looks more like a coffee house than a bedroom, including the snacks and drink choices your portable fridge provide.
