How to Design a Playroom Shared With a TV Room

Design matters when you are forced to share a TV room with a play room. Finished basements, for example, are ideal for extending comfortable living from the main floor of a house to below ground. While it is sometimes difficult to use one large area for adults and children to share, it is not impossible. The trick to succeeding with a shared room is to use existing furniture to divide the space to suit relaxing grownups and playful kids.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the room two different colors. Paint the TV area of the room with warm, subtle colors -- tan or gold, for example -- and the play area with blue, pink, green or other bold and bright shades. Painting will help visually divide the room into two distinct areas.

    • 2

Place the TV into a corner so that it faces into the TV area. Face all furniture -- a couch and chairs, for example -- toward the television to keep toys and playthings out of your direct line of vision.

    • 3

Frame the TV area of the room with the furniture. Divide the entire room in half, for example, by positioning one end of a couch so it extends from a wall into the center of the room. Align the back of the couch with the wall color transition between warm and bright shades.

Position a bookshelf behind the couch. Face the front of the bookshelf toward the TV area so adults can use it to hold books, magazines, DVDs or dishes. The bookshelf also acts as a makeshift wall between the TV and play area.

    • 5

Paint the reverse side of the bookshelf with bright images -- a smiling sunshine, flowers or superheroes, for example. Keep all children's furniture along the same wall from which the bookshelf extends to keep the objects semi-hidden from a direct line of vision from the TV area -- although exposed enough to keep an eye on what is going on.

Use a toy chest in the play area to keep all toys cleaned up once playtime is over. A toy chest keeps kid's items off of the floor and helps maintain a calm, aesthetic visual appeal of the entire room.
