How to Make a Rod Pocket for the Back of a Tapestry Wall Hanging

A rod pocket is a a fabric tube that is attached to the back of a tapestry or other cloth wall hanging. A rod is slid through the tube and then secured to the wall. A rod pocket allows a wall hanging to hang straight down, with no sagging or unattractive draping. If you have a wall hanging or tapestry that does not have a rod pocket, sew one yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the side of the tapestry that is going to be topmost and add 1 inch.

    • 2

Cut a strip of fabric that is 8 inches wide and as long as the measurement you found in Step 1.

    • 3

Fold down both narrow ends of the strip of fabric twice, making creases that are ¼ inch deep both times, and sew them flat. This gives you a rectangle of fabric with two finished shorter ends.

    • 4

Fold the strip of fabric in half along the length, and iron the fabric flat.

    • 5

Sew along the raw edges of the fabric, creating a tube.

    • 6

Spread the tapestry on the floor, the rear side facing up.

    • 7

Line up the sewn edge of the tube with the topmost edge of the tapestry and secure it with pins.

    • 8

Sew the edge of the tube to the topmost edge of the tapestry.

    • 9

Remove the pins. The tapestry is now ready to be strung onto a rod and hung.
