How to Make Bedrooms Look Earthy

An earthy bedroom is a relaxing and tranquil space. Soft earthy tones, natural finishes and highly textured elements all combine to create a feeling of bringing the outdoors in. Creating an earthy bedroom is a fairly simple process as well as a great opportunity to experiment with recycled, ecologically-friendly materials. Whether you are a fan of light, soft shades or bold, dark shades, you can achieve an earthy, nature-inspired interior in your bedroom.

Instructions

Use earthy colors on the walls of your bedroom. Combining shades of brown, rusty reds, burnt oranges and splashes of yellow will create a fall-inspired effect. The addition of light blues and shades of green will create a lighter, more summery feel. For smaller rooms, keep the wall color neutral, with warm, earthy undertones. In larger rooms, or to create an intimate and cozy feel in smaller rooms, combine a rich brown with the more neutral color. Creamy ivory will help lift deep, rich earthy tones.

Create an accent wall with wallpaper featuring a nature-inspired pattern, such as leaves, flowers or an art deco pattern. Don't be afraid of choosing a brown wallpaper, the pattern and the other colors that will be added to the bedroom later will lift the brown shades. Create an intimate area by placing the bed against the accent wall. Over-bed wall lights will help to bring out the earthy tones and create a cozy atmosphere.

Select flooring that complements the earthy tones of the room. Wooden flooring is available in a wide range of colors, both light and dark. Rugs add texture and interest. Alternatively, use a natural-fiber carpet such as seagrass, sisal, hemp or jute. Made from renewable resources, these carpets are completely biodegradable, so they can be shredded for garden mulch. They are also extremely hard-wearing.

Introduce a range of earthy tones with the furniture. For an eclectic style of decor, combine dark woods such as walnut or mahogany with warm redwood and lighter woods such as pine or oak. Add texture with woven storage baskets and a wicker chair. For a more uniform appearance, select a wood that is significantly lighter or darker than the shade of brown in the wallpaper.

Pile pillows, cushions, throws and blankets onto the bed to tie all the earthy tones together and create an interesting and inviting focal point. Use plenty of different shades. Combine light and dark greens and browns, bold and soft oranges and yellows, rusty reds and splashes of hazy lavender and soft blue -- even a small splash of black to give depth.

Complete the earthy look of the bedroom with a few well-chosen accessories. Arrange a display of earthy-colored candles to complement your decor and create a beautifully soft, warm glow around the room when lit. Fill a wooden bowl with pine cones for an accent piece that is rich in texture. Nature-inspired artwork featuring fall scenes will contain all the colors used in the decor, or you can add splashes of green and blue with summery scenes.
