How to Find a Licensed Home Interior Designer

If you can't distinguish pink from peach or wonder whether stripes and plaids go together, you might need the services of a home interior designer. These professionals help clients select the proper window treatments, floor coverings, furniture, lighting and color palettes for a space. Designers need an associate or bachelor's degree to get started in the field, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. They may also complete an apprenticeship before tackling projects on their own. If you need the services of a home interior designer, you can find one who is licensed.

Contact your secretary of state's office or a similar regulatory agency as nearly half of all states require interior designers to be registered with or licensed/certified by the government. To find out if this is a requirement in your state, contact the agency that regulates businesses in your state. The agency can confirm whether a particular individual is licensed and may be able to provide a list of all state-licensed designers.

Check with the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ). This independent organization administers an examination designers must pass to qualify for state licensing. A feature on its website allows you to locate professionals who have passed the exam and hold an NCIDQ certificate.

Find members of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). To join ASID, interior designers must pass the certification exam given by NCIDQ. The "Find a Designer" link on the organization's website allows you to find ASID members within 500 miles of your location.
