How to Make a Homemade Canopy for My Daughter's Bed

A canopy shows how the simplest materials can instantly transform a bed from a humdrum space for sleeping and recharging the body into an elegant and romantic area, that makes your bed look more like it belongs in a storybook castle. This is particularly suitable for a little girl's room as it encourages imagination, making a young girl feel like she is perhaps one of the heroines she reads about in fairy tales. Luckily, you don't need to be a professional designer or seamstress to create such a canopy.

Things You'll Need

  • 10-inch diameter embroidery hoop
  • 2 rod-pocket curtain panels, 44 inches wide by 96 inches long
  • 2 ribbons, 24 inches long
  • Stud finder
  • Screw-in hook

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew and loosen a 10-inch wide embroidery hoop. Remove the inner hoop and discard it.

    • 2

Insert two matching 44- by 96-inch curtain panels onto the embroidery hoop. Once both curtains are on the hoop there will be two slight gaps between the curtains.

    • 3

Knot one end of one 24-inch long ribbon around one of the gaps. Repeat with the other ribbon and the other gap.

    • 4

Tie the free ends of the ribbon together in a puffy bow. Double knot it.

    • 5

Locate a stud in the ceiling around 6 inches from the head of your bed, using a stud finder. Screw a hook into the stud. Hang your bow off the hook and arrange each curtain on either side of the bed. You've finished your canopy.
