How to Decorate Hallways in a Colonial Home

Colonial refers to a decor style that emerged during the 1600s to the 1800s, influenced heavily by English architecture and design styles. Queen Anne, Chippendale and Sheraton furniture styles were common during this period. While original colonial homes had a simplicity and modesty characteristic of the new country, you can be more creative and even extravagant when decorating your own colonial home. For example, your hallways are important spaces that connect rooms, acting as an interstate for the house. They should be welcoming and a showcase of colonial style.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all carpeting in the hallway and install wide-planked knotty pine floors, an authentic detail from original colonial homes. Add a simple rug, such as a braided rug in muted colors, to the floors, or keep them bare.

    • 2

Paint the walls a color typical of colonial homes, such as cream, yellow, blue or green. While wallpaper was rare in authentic colonial homes, you can use it if you are looking for a more ornate or modern effect. Stick to understated patterns and typical colonial colors.

    • 3

Add brass or wrought iron wall sconces to the hallways, keeping them illuminated and cheerful.

    • 4

Add a simple, understated wood accent table to one corner of the hallway. Place a simple blue and white porcelain vase on the table with a short-stemmed bouquet of flowers.

    • 5

Add a simple dried flower wreath to one of the walls or a small wooden hanging clock.
