How to Make a Headboard With a Canopy

While the headboard might seem like a purely aesthetic part of the bed, and not as crucial as the pillows or mattress, in reality the headboard is an ancient functional part of the bed, providing the comfort of the back rest when socializing in bed as the Ancient Greeks did or shielding the sleeper from drafts, as in Northern climates. However, just because the headboard serves such a specific function doesn't mean you can't make a simple, decorative one yourself, even one with a canopy.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay newspaper down outside and spray a 10-inch faux willow leaf wreath with an antique shade of copper, gold or silver to give it a more vintage and decorative look. Allow it to dry overnight.

    • 2

Cut two 36-inch pieces of 1-inch wide ribbon. Attach a safety pin to one end of piece of ribbon and pass the ribbon through the rod pocket of one curtain panel. When finished, you should have fully gathered your curtain panel onto the ribbon. Repeat with the other ribbon and other curtain panel.

    • 3

Turn your wreath over and tie the ribbons of one curtain panel around the lower left side of the wreath, and the ribbons of the other curtain panel around the lower right side of the wreath, knotting each in place. Cut away the excess ribbon and bury the knots in the leaves.

Measure the center of the wall above your bed, or 4 to 6 feet above the head of your bed in the exact center, depending on how high you want your headboard. Mark the spot with a piece of chalk.

    • 5

Hammer a nail onto your chalk mark and hang the wreath from the nail. Arrange the curtain panels neatly along either side of your bed.
