How to Decorate a Home With Mountain Lodge Scheme

The rustic wood, bold colors, and whimsical touches of mountain-lodge decorating make a strong statement, whether in your main home or a vacation cabin. Lodge style is based on heavy, primitive wood, particularly log walls and log furniture. Colors are dark, with hunter green, navy blue, mustard yellow and deep red being popular. Touches of black, especially in plaid fabrics, give contrast. Animal motifs are very common in lodge decor, especially bears, moose, salmon and deer. You can bring the mountains to your home, and create a lodge feel, even if you live in the flatlands.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint your walls soft brown, with black trim to contrast. If you are daring, paint a focal-point wall pine green, or a deep red.

    • 2

Wallpaper the bathrooms and kitchen with a wood pattern. There are many wallpapers designed to look like logs, distressed wood or primitive planking.

    • 3

Cover your floors with thick rugs in greens, blues or browns. Braided wool rugs look great, and are very durable.

    • 4

Light your lodge with an antler chandelier, stained glass fixtures or ceiling lights that have mountain or pine-tree designs. Lamps should look outdoorsy, with pine-tree or animal motifs.

    • 5

Look for furniture that is heavy and wood-framed, with neutral-colored upholstery. Tables in heavy, planked wood are naturals for a lodge style.

    • 6

Go for plaid curtains. Black with hunter green, navy, mustard yellow or barn red are all mountain-lodge style.

    • 7

Spread your bed with a quilt featuring mountain animals, plaids or pines in deep colors.

    • 8

Finish your decorating with paintings, collectibles and accessories that have a lodge theme and look. Tin and pewter, candles, greenery, and images of mountain wildlife and pine trees are all excellent choices.
