How to Decorate a Large Commercial Hallway

A commercial hallway is often the first chance for a business to create a good impression for its clients. First impressions are very important; a tatty-looking, rundown hallway does not inspire confidence in a business, no matter how good that business is. Although decorating such a large space may seem daunting at first due to its size, this is actually one of the easiest areas to decorate to create a clean, organized, professional-looking environment.

Instructions

Split tall, high walls into sections to create visual interest. A dado rail at chair-rail height is one option to break up large wall space. It creates a clean, sleek look, while allowing different tones to be added to the wall, rather than one huge space in the same color. For a more classic look, add wood paneling to the lower half of the walls, and paint the top half.

Use neutral colors with a warm undertone on the walls. Warm creams and soft yellows work well with wood features such as paneling and doors, because they lift the darker wood tones. For a more modern look where the wall is split with a dado rail, paint woodwork white and use a slightly darker tone on the lower half of the walls than on the top half. If the business has a logo featuring a certain color, introduce this color within the neutral shades.

Add glass blocks along the walls to allow light to flow through the hallway. A dark hallway can create an oppressive feeling, but adding panes of glass prevents any form of privacy in the workplace. Glass blocks allow light to travel through them, while maintaining a feeling of privacy.

Use a flooring that is hard-wearing. A hallway is a high-traffic area, and carpet can look shabby and worn very quickly. Wood or tile flooring is one option, but they can create lots of noise. For a quieter atmosphere, use a natural fiber carpet such as seagrass, sisal, hemp, or jute. These carpets are extremely hard-wearing, as well as being an ecologically friendly option.

Add simple but comfortable furniture with clean lines. Leather is a good option for seating, because it is hard-wearing and easy to clean. In a large hallway, use black leather to add depth to the color scheme. To create a more relaxed effect, add a couple of brightly colored cushions to each sofa. Avoid individual chairs, as this will create a cluttered look, even in a large hallway. Place a small table at either end of each sofa, to give waiting clients somewhere to put a cup of coffee or a laptop.

Place fresh flowers in simple glass vases on small tables to create visual interest. For a classic look, use sculptures. Hang artwork on the wall. If the business is related to artwork in any way, this is an opportunity to display that work. Alternatively, select something motivational and uplifting, such as landscapes or cityscapes. If the business is linked to foreign countries, display pictures of those countries.
