How to Use a Rag Mop to Put Faux Finish on Floors

Adding a faux finish can boost the appeal of your floor. Faux finishes merge two or more colors to create a blended design. Although a well-executed faux finish provides the look of professional design, you can achieve this look with a common rag mop and a basic mopping technique. Your new faux finish will impress your family, friends and any decor enthusiasts who visit your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Pry open a gallon of paint with a flat head screwdriver. Stir the paint with a paint stirrer until it is thoroughly mixed. Pour the paint into a clean mop bucket

    • 2

Soak the rag mop head in the bucket of paint. Place the wet mop head into the bucket wringer. Press the wringer handle to squeeze out excess paint.

    • 3

Mop the floor in a figure-eight pattern. The figure-eight pattern will ensure an even coat throughout the base layer of paint. Allow 24 hours for the floor to dry.

    • 4

Wash out the mop bucket and wringer with liquid dish soap and hot water. Spray water into the bucket with a high-pressure hose to remove all traces of the base color paint. Allow 24 hours for the bucket to air dry.

    • 5

Open a second gallon of paint -- in a second color -- and 1/2 gallon can of glaze. Pour the paint and glaze into the mop bucket. Stir to thoroughly mix the ingredients.

    • 6

Soak the rag mop head in the bucket of paint and glaze mix then squeeze out excess in bucket wringer. Mop the floor in a figure-eight pattern as before. Allow 24 hours for the floor to dry for your new faux finish.
