How to Reuse Old Drawers

Several years of slammed drawers, crayon art work and general abuse will create dressers ready for the curb or landfill. Throwing away an unwanted dresser is a missed opportunity to create useful or decorative elements with the drawers. Drawers, whether from large bureaus or lingerie chests, provide the ideal size for several DIY projects. Repurpose the drawers from your unwanted, outdated or broken-down dressers to create functional and aesthetically pleasing elements throughout your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the drawers with potting soil to display flowers or grow an herb garden. Cover the inside of the drawer with plastic to prevent water damage.

    • 2

Attach the drawers to the wall with screws and L-brackets to create shelving. According to Organic Authority, attaching the drawers to the wall with the handles facing outward will create shelving to hold towels in the bathroom or toys in a child's bedroom.

    • 3

Attach casters to the bottom of the drawers to create closet or under-the-bed storage. Fill the drawers with blankets, canned goods or pet toys and push them under beds or into the corners of closets or pantries to turn these areas into usable space.

Turn the drawers into a child's art project. Allow the kids to draw, paint or color the inside and outside of the drawers. Once they are finished, use the drawers to store toys in a bedroom or set a blanket and small pillow inside to turn the artwork into a doll's bed.

Cover the bottom of the drawer with a blanket to create a pet bed. Set the bed inside the pet's crate or at the foot of your bed to give your dog or cat a warm, safe place to sleep.
