How to Bend Hard Rubber With a Metal Core

Installing rubber-coated metal is often an essential means of providing corrosion protection in professional facilities. Food manufacturing companies use rubber-coated metal conduit, for example, to protect pipes from extended exposure to food bacteria. Use a hickey hand bender to bend rubber with a metal core. The hickey bender closely resembles a traditional conduit hand bender. The main difference between the two is that the hickey bender requires multiple minor pipe bends to ensure the rubber coating is not damaged in the process.

Things You'll Need

  • 1-by-60-inch rubber-coated metal conduit
  • Measuring tape
  • Permanent marker
  • Hickey hand bender

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the point on the pipe where you must institute a 90-degree bend. For the sake of example, the 90-degree bend must take place 25 inches from the left end of the pipe.

    • 2

Measure 25 inches from the left end of the pipe. Mark the spot with a permanent marker.

    • 3

Measure 6 inches back to the left from the 25-inch mark. Mark this spot with a permanent marker. Measure 2 inches back from the second mark and again mark this spot. You now have three marks.

    • 4

Slide the pipe into the bender until the third mark -- the mark closest to the left end -- is at center on the bender. Bend the pipe upward to a 30-degree angle.

    • 5

Slide the pipe until the second mark is at center on the bender. Bend the pipe up another 30 degrees.

    • 6

Slide the pipe back until the first mark -- the initial 25-inch mark -- is at center on the bender. Bend the pipe up the final 30 degrees to complete the 90-degree bend.
