How to Make Your Own Cable Raceway

A cable raceway is a system of cable management. It is a container used for running cables, often from one room to another. A cable raceway is often used when the cables can not be hidden, and keeps unsightly cables out of the way. There is no standard size for cable runways; they can be 1-by-1-inch or several inches large. The size really depends on how many cables the runway holds; it is always a better idea to go bigger in case more cables need to fit into the cable runway later. Cable runways can also be used outdoors to protect cabling from the elements.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the route of the cable raceway. Plan a route from where the cables start and where they end. Cable raceways usually run along the ceiling, on the edge next to a wall, thus minimizing their impact on the aesthetics of the room. However, it can also be run along the floor.

    • 2

Attach the first section of plastic piping to the wall. Use clamps to secure the piping into the wall. Piping usually comes in 1- to 3-foot sections. Select an appropriate length. The piping is built to have another end insert into it.

    • 3

Pull the cables through the first section. Pull the cables through the second section of piping and attach it. Insert the second section of piping into the first, and attach it to the wall or ceiling by screwing in clamps.

    • 4

Repeat Step 3 for additional sections of piping. Always pull the cables through the piping as you go. For corners, use an elbow bracket. Do this until you reach your final destination.

      Paint the piping if necessary.
