How to Make Tile Countertop Look Modern

Redecorating your bathroom or kitchen, while a totally worthwhile project, can quickly become expensive. If you've managed to redecorate either of these rooms yourself using simple decorating and design strategies, you might not be sure what to do with a vintage-looking tile countertop that's seen better days. Even though you can always rip it out and install a new one, such a project can quickly become expensive. Rather, a cheaper and equally effective technique is to cover the tiles with a tinted glaze to update and revamp their look.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/3 cup tile cleanser
  • 1 gallon warm water
  • Bucket
  • Sponge
  • Old, clean towels
  • 2 paint roller pans

Instructions

    • 1

Combine 1/3 cup of tile cleanser with 1 gallon warm water in a bucket. Dip a sponge in the mixture and wipe down the tiles. Pat the tiles down with old, clean towels, allowing them to air dry fully.

    • 2

Cover and tape off any areas you don't want the glaze to get on with painter's tape. Pour the tinted glaze into a paint-roller pan, and dip your paint roller in the glaze.

    • 3

Apply a light coat of tinted glaze to the tiles. Allow it to dry for 24 hours, and then apply a second, allowing this glaze to also dry for 24 hours.

Pour clear polyurethane finish into a separate paint-roller pan and insert a new cushion roller onto the paint-roller frame. Apply a light coat of clear polyurethane to the tiles. Allow it to dry for 24 hours. If these are tiles in a high-traffic area, apply a second coat of polyurethane, also allowing it to dry for 24 hours.
