How to Decorate a Bedroom Hutch

A hutch generally refers to a large wooden piece of furniture made of wood and used for storage or to display objects. Hutches can be self-standing or can rest on top of another piece of furniture, such as a desk hutch. However, hutches should not just be utilitarian, particularly ones in your bedroom. You can decorate your wood hutch so that it transforms into a display piece of pride using simple techniques that will take just a few hours.

Instructions

    • 1

Spray the hutch with an all-purpose cleaning spray. Wipe it down with a lint-free cloth and allow it to air-dry.

    • 2

Attach a piece of 80-grit sandpaper to an electric sander. Go all over the surface area of the hutch with the sander, preparing the wood to receive the new finish. Repeat with 200-grit and 300-grit sandpaper.

Wipe down the hutch with a tack cloth. Apply a light coat of crackle finish to the hutch with a foam brush, following the grain of the wood. Allow it an hour or two to dry.

Dip a nylon brush in the paint color of your choice. Apply a light coat of the paint, brushing it on in the opposite direction in which you applied the crackle finish. Allow it to dry overnight. As it dries, it crackles, creating a nice rustic finish.

Attach stencils with painter's tape to the front of the shelves. Choose decorative stencils such as florals, ivy or text. Spray the stencils in with oil-based spray paint. Remove the stencils and allow the paint to air-dry.
