Spray the hutch with an all-purpose cleaning spray. Wipe it down with a lint-free cloth and allow it to air-dry.
Attach a piece of 80-grit sandpaper to an electric sander. Go all over the surface area of the hutch with the sander, preparing the wood to receive the new finish. Repeat with 200-grit and 300-grit sandpaper.
Wipe down the hutch with a tack cloth. Apply a light coat of crackle finish to the hutch with a foam brush, following the grain of the wood. Allow it an hour or two to dry.
Dip a nylon brush in the paint color of your choice. Apply a light coat of the paint, brushing it on in the opposite direction in which you applied the crackle finish. Allow it to dry overnight. As it dries, it crackles, creating a nice rustic finish.
Attach stencils with painter's tape to the front of the shelves. Choose decorative stencils such as florals, ivy or text. Spray the stencils in with oil-based spray paint. Remove the stencils and allow the paint to air-dry.
