How to Change a Dated Kitchen

The kitchen might be the most multi-functional room in the entire house. It's the place where you can prepare food, store food, eat food, entertain guests, do homework, have a home office and relax at the end of the day with a glass of wine or a cup of tea. Since many household members sped so much time in the kitchen, it truly has to be a cheerful, welcoming place. Dated kitchens can seem gloomy, dingy and in some sort of time warp. Luckily, there are simple fixes you can do to give your kitchen a face lift.

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew your cabinets knobs and drawer pulls and throw them away or donate them. Wash the cabinets with an all-purpose spray and wipe them down. Sand them with an electric sander and 100-grit and 220-grit sandpaper.

    • 2

Wipe the cabinets down with a tack cloth and then paint them a bright, modern color. Give the cabinets two coats of paint, allowing 12 hours of drying time between each coat.

    • 3

Screw in new drawer pulls and knobs. With the paint and new knobs you will dramatically revamp the look of your cabinets.

    • 4

Install a glass, ceramic or metallic tiled backsplash which contrasts your cabinets. This is a cheap way to give your kitchen an edgy look.

    • 5

Replace old light fixtures with new ones that match your cabinet knobs and pulls. Install hardwood flooring. Nothing looks more dated that linoleum or vinyl flooring.

    • 6

Add a hip table lamp to the table or the counter. This will not only brighten the space, but make it feel more like a proper room.
