Good Interior Designs for Inclined Ceilings

Decorating rooms with sloped ceilings can be challenging. The small space where the ceiling meets the wall can be used for a variety of effects if you do some careful planning ahead of time. No matter the type of room where a sloped ceiling is found, there is a creative solution to achieve the greatest impact.
  1. Bedrooms

    • Upstairs dormer rooms often have inclined ceilings that fit into the roof line of the home. Instead of fighting the reduced height of the room, turn it to your advantage. Place the head of the bed, where height is rarely needed, into the small wall space for a cozy, cottage look. You can also place one side of the bed in the small space and build a vertical canopy from the ceiling for the outer edge, giving the space more privacy as a sleeping alcove.

    Dens or Studies

    • The sloped area where ceiling meets wall is the perfect place for a desk or computer center in a room used as a den or study. The wall area can be painted with bright-colored paints to make the incline recede for an appearance of more space. Wooden planking on the slanted wall gives a neat and homey effect for a den or study and can be a good solution for rooms that double as guest quarters. Inclined areas also make pleasant sites for window seats.

    Kitchens

    • Kitchens in rooms with inclined ceilings require particular care because the kitchen is a work area with lots of movement, often attracting many people to help with food preparation or to socialize. Placing appliances under the inclined area of wall can be a good solution. This lower wall point is also a good place for storage of utensils, small appliances or pantry items. Use light colors to open up the inclined area and add hanging lights to balance the higher ceiling portion.

    Living Rooms

    • Living room areas in A-frame homes can be a particular problem. Adding horizontal storage in the smaller area of the room helps to balance out the design. A horizontal entertainment center can be the perfect solution for the room. A skylight set in an inclined wall will have a great effect on a living room space, providing additional natural light for the room and a contemporary feel. Hang vertical posters or paintings on the larger wall to make the most of the space.
