Outfit the bed with sheets in one of the teenager's favorite colors. If possible, stick to colors that are lighter and brighter, such as butter yellow, lime green, mint blue, coral and other shades. This will combat the maturity of the laminate paneling.
Put a reversible duvet cover on the comforter. Ideally, one side of the comforter should be a solid color and the other side of the comforter should be a patterned shade. This allows the teenager to have the freedom to switch the look of her bed at a whim.
Hang a large, light-colored framed mirror across from every window in the room. You'll have to nail into the laminate, but it will multiply the natural light in the room.
Hang a large, light colored framed mirror across from the bedroom door. This will multiply the sense of space in the room.
Invite the teenager to hang framed posters of his choice in the room. Encourage the teenager to select light-colored prints and images to make the room seem bigger, but autonomy of choice is important for the teenager to have.
Position a desk with a hutch on top in blonde wood in one corner, as far away from the bed as possible. The blonde wood contributes to the look of light and airiness in the room without being as childish as white laminate wood. The hutch gives the teenager extra storage space without taking up more floor space.
Place a brightly colored inflatable chair or beanbag chair in one free corner. This will give the teenager a more comfortable seating option that you can stuff under the bed to free up space.
