Ask your son what he wants to see in his room. Ask him to choose two or more colors to use in the room and what types of sports, music or other interests he wants to display. Write down the answers to help you choose decor throughout the process.

Paint the walls and trim of the room based on the color choices you wrote down. Visit a few different home improvement stores to browse the paints that have been mixed by mistake. These paints are sold at a considerable discount. A $30 can of paint may be sold for $10.

Hang posters that feature the sports teams, musicians or other interests. Posters can be inexpensive but cover large areas. Use this to your advantage and purchase a poster for each wall.

Cover the bed with new bedding in the colors that your teen chose. While a full set with matching pillowcases, sheets, a dust ruffle and a comforter can be expensive; you can create the same effect by buying discounted single items and grouping them together yourself. Purchase sheets and pillow cases in one of his favorite colors and purchase the other items in another color he likes.

Visit a local flea market or garage sale with your son to pick out accessories. Think creatively as you browse the items that are within your price range. For example, an old lamp with a busted shade can be painted and fitted with a new shade from a discount store. Old vinyl records that no longer play can be glued together in an overlapping design to hang on the wall.

Hang shelves or stack colorful crates inside the closet to maximize storage and organization. Your teen will likely enjoy having spaces for holding CDs, magazines and shoes; that he can arrange himself. It may even inspire him to become more organized.
