How to Decorate a Room With Superheroes

Superheroes are a popular theme for young boys who idolize the powerful agents of order reigning over their chaotic, villain-ridden hometowns. A superhero-themed room provides an immersive backdrop for endless creative games and toy battles. The key to designing a superhero look that will last lies in finding the right balance of neutral pieces and clearly themed accents. Rooms that have a little of both are easily updated to grow with your kids over the years.

Instructions

Pick out your child's favorite superhero. A superhero-themed bedroom is much easier to pull off once you’ve narrowed your inspiration down to a single character. Find out if he has a favorite villain he wants to incorporate as well. If you’re not familiar with these characters, ask your child to show you comics, cartoons or toys that give you a clear vision of what your decorating theme will be based on.

Paint the walls in a muted tone that will complement your superhero palette. Medium gray or slate blue set an ideal backdrop for almost any superhero. If you’re artistically inclined, choose one wall to feature a mural such as the black silhouette of a cityscape along the bottom of the room with a few yellow windows shining from the buildings in glow-in-the-dark paint.

Add a few posters, tin signs, comic book prints or wall stickers that feature your superhero of choice. Include your chosen villain, if desired, on the opposite wall, staring his nemesis down.

Use bedding that features the brighter shades of your superhero palette. Red, blue and black stripes scream Spider-man, black, grey and yellow suit Batman’s look and red, white and blue fit the Superman theme. Stripes or solids accentuate your theme without crossing the line into tacky and overly busy, like some screaming superhero-print bed sets do.

Pull the look together with bold accents that complete the superhero theme. Use throw pillows, pillow cases, lamp shades, light switch covers and rugs that feature superhero logos or the superheroes themselves. Get creative with little touches that will take the decor to the next level, like a spider web toy net in the upper corner of the room for a Spider-Man theme or a Bat signal nightlight to summon Batman.

Put favorite superhero toys on display with mounted shelves on the walls. Hang a superhero cape, costume or mask on a wall hook for quick costume changes.
