How to Balance an Off-Center Window

Having a window or set of windows dead center along a wall is so typical, anything that deviates from this norm can seem odd. While having an off-center window might seem like an architectural curse, it actually gives your home a fascinating detail that lends a degree of individuality to your interiors. The key to taking advantage of an off-center window is by providing it with the correct amount of balance, so that when your eye falls upon this area, all the elements look well composed.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of the window with a measuring tape. Write down the dimensions.

    • 2

Purchase a mirror or framed print of art or photography that matches those same dimensions as the window. Choose a print with light colors that match the view from the window. Otherwise, just use a mirror.

    • 3

Measure the width between the edge of the nearest wall and the window. Write down this measurement. Walk to opposite side of the wall where the window is and measure this amount from the other wall that frames the window. Mark the spot with a piece of chalk. Your goal is to find the spot on the wall to hang the frame so that the frame and window together split center.

    • 4

Hang the mirror or framed art with a handheld drill and picture hanging hardware. When you finish, the window and framed art or mirror should split center.

    • 5

Place an oversized bright red or black vase or accent chair directly between the window and mirror. This will help anchor all the elements together in a balanced composition.
