DIY: Upholstered Headboard for a Toddler Bed

An upholstered headboard makes a practical yet decorative option in bedrooms for all ages. When it comes to toddlers, the decorative aspect might make the idea of a "big girl" or "big boy" bed more appealing, not to mention the fact that the cushioning pads the impact of heads bumping into the headboard in the middle of the night. You don't need to sew to complete this project, which allows you to personalize the headboard with child-friendly fabric designs such as ABCs, race cars or favorite storybook characters.

Instructions

    • 1

Spray the plywood with a spray adhesive and press the sheet of foam onto it so they forge a strong bond. Allow them to set for 20 minutes.

    • 2

Cut a piece of batting to 46 inches by 45 inches. Lay the batting over the foam. Fold the batting at the corners and pull the fabric back like you're wrapping a present. Yank the fabric taut to the back of the board and use the staple gun to secure it into place.

    • 3

Cut a piece of fabric in a soft flannel or cotton material to the same dimensions as your batting, 46 inches by 45 inches. Lay it over the batting and fold each of the four corners, pulling the fabric back like you're wrapping a present. Yank the fabric taut over to the back of the board. Use the staple gun to secure it into place.

Run a stud finder on the wall where the headboard will be located. Mark the placement of the studs with a pencil. Attach the bottom part of two flush mounts with the handheld drill to the wall where the studs sit, spacing them about 24 inches apart.

Drill the top parts of the flush mounts to the back of your headboard, spacing them 24 inches apart. Slide the tops of the flush mounts onto the bottom parts of the flush mounts on the wall, allowing them to interlock. If you don't like the position of your headboard, you can always adjust the mounts.
