How to Faux Bois a Table

Faux bois is simply a term that means "fake wood" in French. Faux bois dates back to the crafts of highly skilled stone workers in France who made wire frame furniture pieces and then molded them into interlocked shapes of branches and logs. Nowadays, any item made to look like wood or organic pieces of a tree, such as stumps or branches, that consists of a material that is not wood, such as metal, cement or plastic, fits under the term "faux bois."

Instructions

    • 1

Spray your table with an all-purpose cleaning spray. Wipe it down with a sponge, removing all caked on dirt and dust. Allow it to air dry.

    • 2

Pour oil-based primer into a paint roller pan. Dip your paint roller in the primer and cover the table with a light coat of primer. Give it four hours to dry.

    • 3

Pour oil-based paint that is cream or honey colored into a fresh paint roller pan liner. Use your paint roller to cover the table with a gentle coat of paint. This is your base color for the wood table. Allow it to dry overnight.

    • 4

Lay your wood grain stencils over the top of the table, attaching them with painter's tape. Spray the pattern of the stencils onto the table with a wood brown oil-based spray paint. Remove the stencils carefully and allow them to dry.

    • 5

Place wood trim stencils on the legs and edges of the table, attaching them with painter's tape. Spray the stencils onto the table. Remove the stencils before the paint has a chance to dry. Allow the stencils to dry overnight.

    • 6

Dip a 3-inch wide nylon brush into clear polyurethane. Cover the table with a light coat of polyurethane. Allow it to dry overnight.
