How to Decorate a Boy's Room With Surfboards

Surfing is more than a sport; for its devotees, it’s an obsession. Colorful surf-themed pieces are easy to find. The key to creating a surfer bedroom is combining surf pieces with casual beach decor for a balanced effect. If you have too many surfboard-shaped knickknacks, you’ll end up with a cluttered, tacky space instead of a comfortable surfer’s oasis. Done right, a boy’s room decorated with surfboards will combine the relaxing atmosphere of the beach with the energy of the sport in perfect proportions.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint all but one wall of the room in a sandy beige. Turn the last wall into a mural for displaying your surfboards. Begin with a sky blue base. Paint an uneven line of sand at the bottom of the mural and three or four feet of brilliantly blue water in the middle. If painting water is beyond your artistic skills, opt for a simple brown or white fence line between the sand and sky instead.

    • 2

Mount any surfboards you own on the accent wall, standing vertically as though stuck in the sand. Use life-size wall stickers of surfboards for a more affordable substitute if you don’t own surfboards.

    • 3

Use bedding that mirrors the colors of the surfboards. Solid colors or bright stripes will complement the theme without taking it too far. Don't use bedding that has pictures of surfboards.

    • 4

Hang a raffia valence over the window to give the room unmistakable beach-shack flair.

    • 5

Incorporate a few accessories that feature surfboards, such as fan blades, a lamp or a rug that is shaped like a surfboard. Be selective.
