How to Make Dividers in Plastic Containers Fit Better

With dividers, your items can be much easier to find, and keeping them organized requires little effort while maximizing space. The process of adding dividers to a plastic container is very easy; sometimes, though, the dividers are loose and can slip, making them useless. Plastic containers built with special grooves can be readjusted for a better fit. If you want to reuse old plastic containers, try replacing their dividers with ones made from inexpensive foam blocks or adding sticky tack to secure them.

Instructions

  1. Containers with Grooves

    • 1

Remove the dividers from the plastic containers. Sometimes, they can become loose if debris gets lodged underneath them or at the bottom of the container. Once all the dividers are removed, sweep out any debris and wipe down each divider with a damp rag.

    • 2

Inspect each divider for cracks or breaks in the plastic -- this may be causing them to be loose. Discard any damaged dividers and replace them with new ones of the same type.

    • 3

Slide all of the dividers back in place; starting in one direction and then adding the rest going in the other direction.

    • 4

Firmly push down on the junction of each divider to ensure they have interlocked. This is the most important step to ensure the dividers fit better; without the interlocking feature engaged, the dividers are prone to becoming loose again.

    • 5

Tap the dividers at each junction with a hammer. Do so firmly enough to ensure the dividers are locked in place while being gentle enough not to crack the plastic.

    Replacing Dividers

    • 6

Collect the plastic containers you'd like to organize and determine what each one will be used for. Remove the old dividers.

    • 7

Count how many containers you have in total and purchase a matching number of foam blocks or boards.

    • 8

Measure the length and width of each container to determine the size of each divider. Cut out the appropriate size from the foam block, with scissors or an X-acto knife, no more than 1-inch thick.

    • 9

Place each foam divider into the container to test the fit. If necessary, use an X-acto knife or sharp blade to cut off excess foam and achieve a secure fit. Don't cut off too much because the foam is pliable and you'll want it to be very snug to against the container to stay in place.

    • 10

Assemble your dividers inside the container. If you simply want a series of columns with no horizontal intersections, then leave the dividers as is. If you want to add rows to make several small boxes, then you'll need to measure several small pieces of foam to fit between each row.

    • 11

Insert each small piece of foam between each row to finish the dividers.

    Containers Without Grooves

    • 12

Remove all of the dividers from their containers.

    • 13

Sweep away any dirt or debris and wipe down the dividers and container with a damp rag. Allow the plastic to dry thoroughly.

    • 14

Place small strips of sticky tack along the bottom edge of each divider. You don't have to cover the entire bottom edge; use your discretion to determine how much you'll need to add to make the dividers fit better.

    • 15

Replace each divider and press down firmly for 30 seconds to secure a bond between the sticky tack and plastic.

    • 16

Cut off any excess sticky tack spilling from the bottoms of the dividers using the X-acto knife.
