Cute Ways to Decorate a Small-Sized Bedroom

Small bedrooms are among the most difficult-to-design spaces in a home. The limited floor space tends to feel cramped once furniture is in place, and cluttered once personal touches and belongings are added. It is important that design techniques and furniture selection take these smaller dimensions into account. Choosing colors which brighten the room, and furniture with smaller proportions, can aid in enhancing a small room, making it just as comfortable as any other room in the house.
  1. Color

    • Wall color is an essential component in any room, but is especially important when planning the design for a small space. Stick to light colors -- white, cream, and pastels are ideal as they will reflect light, making the room feel brighter and larger. It is best to completely avoid dark colors, as they make the space feel closed in and more confined. A single wall color is preferable to multiple shades, and if possible, paint all moldings the same shade.

For a cute color addition, add some geometric patterns to the walls in colors which contrast the main shade. This adds visual interest to the space without being obtrusive or taking up space.

    Furniture

    • Furnishings should be scaled down in a small space, and limited as much as possible. Seek out pieces which serve more than one purpose and utilize shelving to eliminate unnecessary bookshelves. Adding a hollow window seat will add some comfy seating and serve as hidden storage for shoes, seasonal clothing or other seldom used items.

Save space by using a full- or queen-sized bed instead of a king, and select storage pieces which work within the small space. Bins that roll under the bed or are aesthetically appealing enough to be placed on shelves are ideal. Most home decorating stores have a wide selection of cloth bins in bright, fun colors, which are ideal for hiding objects while looking good. A platform bed frame is unobtrusive and low in height, which means it won’t be overwhelming in a small space.

    Lighting

    • Adding light to a small space gives it a larger, more open feel. The best lighting is usually natural light, which means sheer curtains are an ideal option. If natural light is limited, soft light bulbs are the next best thing. Track lighting is a good choice, since it won’t take up much-needed floor space, is soft and adjustable and can be angled as needed to lighten particularly dark areas.

A fun touch, particularly for teenagers’ rooms are brightly colored paper lanterns. These pieces are usually hung from the ceiling and are adjustable to highlight dark spots in the room. Additionally, their varied sizes make them ideal for small rooms and the fun colors add to the look while taking up minimal space.

Wall-mounted lights are another good option, but and harsh or fluorescent bulbs should be avoided. Add a mirror or two to the walls across from the main light source to create the visual effect of more space.

    Accessories

    • Keep accents and accessories minimal to prevent a cluttered feeling to the space. Keep the size of each piece proportional to the overall size of the room, to stop them from being overwhelming. Add some framed prints to the walls, a vase of flowers to the side table and a few knickknacks to bring in a personal touch. These pieces should fit with the overall color scheme of the room, or for added visual interest, select a few pieces with bold, bright colors.

Any materials used in the space should be kept lightweight and should feature simple patterns or plain colors. Window shades in natural materials, including bamboo or in light-colored cloth, will add privacy when closed while allowing light in when opened.
