How to Calculate the Placement of Pictures on a Wall

Hanging pictures on your wall just right can seem like a daunting task. What most homeowners don’t realize is that there is a science to how frames should be hung. When followed, the pictures will have a welcoming and eye catching flow that will have everyone looking at those family photos up and down your hallway.

      Trace all of the picture frames onto paper. Write the contents of the picture on the front of the paper. Turn the picture frame over and mark the center of the hanging wire. Cut out the paper pieces and use them to guide your arranging.

      Use double-sided tape as you arrange the papers in position with the writing side out. Drill or nail through the paper guide and your pictures will hang exactly as you planned.

      Sort and group your pictures together how you want them to appear on the wall. Hang pictures of your children together since the theme is the same. Group together wedding pictures, artwork and family photos by theme.

      Arrange even numbers of like frames tightly together to form squares and rectangles. Make the center point of the arrangement at eye level and work outward.

      Arrange unlike frames asymmetrically. Space the frames a hand's width apart and at different levels.

      Form a museum look with art by positioning the halfway point at 58 inches up the wall.
