How to Decorate a Kid's Room in Red & Purple

Red and purple are both strong colors that can clash, but they can also create a funky and striking effect when combined correctly. This is a fun color combination that is suitable for boys and girls, whether they are preschool or preteen. A number of different effects can be achieved with red and purple, depending on which shades you choose to work with and there are several ideas to ensure you create a really special space.

Instructions

Decide upon the dominant color. When combining two colors in interior decor, one color should always be more dominant than the other. You may choose to have an entirely red room with just a hint of purple or vice versa, or you may choose to split the color almost evenly, with just an extra splash of one color in the accessories.

Select the shades of red and purple you are going to use. Bright, bold shades can be combined with touches of black to lend depth to the color scheme, and yellow can be used to lift the strong colors. Softer pastel shades of red and purple can be combined with splashes of rich cream and light olive green for a lighter, more feminine color scheme.

Plan how you are going to use the colors. Three red walls and one purple wall, four red walls and purple skirting board, red and cream walls with purple accessories and four purple walls with red accessories are just a few options.

Use a simple motif such as a star, flower, circle, paw print or butterfly to add texture and interest to the walls. For example, if you have three purple walls, stencil a group of different sized red stars in the top corner. You can even extend the stars across the ceiling a little. Then stencil purple stars onto the red wall. Incorporate the motif around the rest of the decor, such as star-print bedding.

Add brightly colored purple and red storage boxes to the room for keeping toys, dress-up costumes and art equipment neat and tidy. Alternate the colored boxes along one wall to make the storage a cool design feature too. In a preteen room, add a desk and display purple and red ring-binders on a shelf.

Introduce small splashes of complementary colors. A cushion on the bed, a rug on the floor or even a scarf tied to the back of a chair are all ways to add splashes of these colors.

Hang red and purple Christmas decorations to create unusual and sparkly, color coordinated decor. Hang them from the ceiling to create a mobile over the bed, or from the window to catch the light.
