Red is the traditional color of bricks, so for a traditionally decorated, somewhat conservative basement, red bricks are a safe and smart choice. Although red bricks are somewhat normal and expected, rest assured that the choice to put bricks in your basement flooring will be interesting enough, making your basement memorable and interesting without picking an unusual type of brick.
In a basement that receives a lot of light -- such as basements that are only partially subterranean, or in basements with recessed lighting fixtures that keep the entire basement illuminated -- dark bricks will add a lot of class and sophistication. Dark bricks come in colors such as dark brown, dark gray and maroon. Avoid using dark brick in basements that don't have a lot of light, unless you want to turn your basement into a dungeon.
Use light colors such as gold, light tan and white in basements that are naturally dark and need a touch of light to keep them from becoming gloomy and frightening places. Unfortunately, light colored bricks might require extra cleaning over time to keep them looking light and beautiful.
Specialty brick colors, including green, yellow and pink, certainly make a statement. These colors can be used to match with your decor if you plan to decorate your basement with a specific color scheme. Beware of picking a color that might look dated over time or devalue your home. Although you may like specialty brick colors, future home buyers may be less charmed by your blue brick basement floor.
