How to Decorate Over a Curved Fireplace

Curved fireplaces can go one of two ways: Up, with a curved fireplace mantel or curved hood fireplace, or out, with a fireplace and mantel that bulge out from the wall. Fireplaces make a natural focal point for a room, and unadorned ones look unwelcoming. Incorporate a range of styles, textures and shapes to make your rounded fireplace an eye-popping focal point.

Instructions

    • 1

Drum up a focal point for the wall above the fireplace, if your fireplace mantel curves in an arch. Try hanging a mirror above the fireplace, or a painting or sculpture you love. You can also hang a complementary diptych or triptych if you prefer -- a piece with an arched top complements the curve of the fireplace. For rounded fireplaces that bulge out, this won't work.

Find knickknacks that flatter the room or the artistic focal point. This could be vases that bring out a dominant color in your art, a collection of shells to emphasize a nautical theme in your room, or a collection of old books and wine bottles for a bohemian chic look. Purchases these items or scrounge them from your trinkets.

Group the knickknacks along the mantel's surface, creating small clusters of like objects -- groups of odd numbers are most effective. Try a few books on on side and a couple wine bottles on the other, or three small vases on one side to complement art above the fireplace. You'll be able to do this easily with a rounded-style fireplace, since the top of the mantel is flat. If your fireplace has a curved hood but a straight mantel, you can also decorate the mantel.

Incorporate additional light sources to brighten the area. With a curved mantel fireplace, you can drape string lights along the mantel to brighten and decorate it, then work in texture with silk flower garlands, decorative textiles or other soft materials. Add candles or string lightw on a flat, rounded mantel or hang wall sconces for a classic effect.
