How to Scrape a Textured Wall

Textured walls can transform a room, adding a sense of depth and contour. Textured walls can make a room feel like you're in an ancient palace in Europe or in a dusty adobe home in the southwest, depending on the texture and color schemes. However, like all types of wall decor, you can get tired of it. While textured walls might seem permanent, you can scrape off the texture and start over with a new type of adornment for your interiors.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover the floors of the area where you'll be working with drops cloths or old sheets. Put on goggles and a dust mask.

    • 2

Lay the blade of your 8-inch floor scraper against the middle of the textured wall. Exert pressure down on it and push it up quickly. Angle the scraper back and forth and repeat this movement of pushing down and up until you figure out the best way to hold the scraper for you to remove the maximum amount of paint.

    • 3

Continue in this manner until you've gotten the majority of textured paint and other materials off the walls. Sharpen a hand-held paint scraper with a metal file.

    • 4

Run the metal scraper along the walls, pushing down and up, removing the texture from the smaller, harder to reach areas.
