How to Glue Furring Strips to Foam Insulation

Furring strips refer to a material that builders often use when dealing with walls or ceilings. Furring strips are typically made of wood, though sometimes metal, and are used to make a backing surface for a wall or ceiling covering. The strips are typically 1 to 2 inches in thickness, and you can layer them on top of each other for more support. If you're adding a foam board for insulation, the board should be able to slide in snugly on top of the furring strips. Gluing them, however, ensures a secure attachment.

Instructions

    • 1

Install the furring strips vertically or horizontally on top of the wall studs, screwing them in with a hand-held drill. Check their straightness with a level and adjust if necessary.

    • 2

Spray the furring strips with an industrial-strength adhesive. Hold the spray 8 inches away and make even back and forth movements, making sure you cover all of the strips uniformly.

    • 3

Press a sheet of foam insulation immediately onto the furring strips, starting at the far left side of the wall. Check to make sure the insulation is level; adjust it if necessary. Press it firmly against the wall for five to 10 minutes before moving on and repeating with the next sheet of foam. If necessary, use a clamp to help secure the insulation while the adhesive dries.
