How to Reduce Echoes in a Room

Large rooms offer plenty of space for design and functionality, but they also produce echoes, especially with hardwood or tiled floors. However, an echoing room does not have to be that way. Using design elements involving heavy and thick fabrics, any room can be made to absorb unnecessary sound. In addition to stopping echoes, heavy fabrics give a room a cozy feel.

Instructions

    • 1

Hang drapes on the windows. Choose a thick, heavy fabric that will not only reduce echoes, but will also help block out light.

    • 2

Place a large rug on the floor of the room. Choose a rug that has longer fibers for maximum sound absorption.

    • 3

Furnish the room with upholstered furniture. If a piece is not upholstered, add a cushion or fabric cover to it.

    • 4

Place upholstered furniture against large walls and other areas that are especially prone to echoes.

    • 5

Decorate the walls with fabric wall hangings. Staple a piece of quilt batting to the back of pictures frames.
