Instructions

    • 1

Paint the porch structure, ceiling and surrounding walls white or a light, neutral shade. This will make it appear more spacious. Let the paint dry for 24 hours.

    • 2

Place the desired seating arrangement against the wall along the center of the porch. Use wicker or rattan chairs with bright cushions to lend a casual look to the space, or opt for a plush couch and seats with wood bases and white upholstery for a stylish arrangement. Use low-profile pieces that will not block the narrow walkway.

    • 3

Place a thin side table or stool next to the seating arrangement to provide room for keys, newspapers and other items.

    • 4

Spread a large rug on the floor near the seating arrangement. Depending on personal preference, choose a bamboo, jute or raffia rug for a natural touch, or a striped rug for decorative flair. Match the colors on the rug to those on the upholstery.

    • 5

Place a small wrought-iron or wood dining table and matching chairs on one end of the porch near the seating arrangement for hosting casual lunches or for family brunches. Use a runner, tablecloth or place mats for added appeal.

    • 6

Place potted plants in the screened-in porch to add natural color to the space and to create a comfortable environment. Use large tropical plants in bamboo or wood pots to fill an empty corner of the porch. Depending on personal preference, line identical pots along the side of the porch or group large and small pots together to create a staggered arrangement.

    • 7

Mount paintings or prints of scenery on the wall behind the seating arrangement for a decorative touch. Insert hooks into the ceiling along the front edge or sides of the porch and hang planting baskets filled with trailing flowering plants.

    • 8

Mount small wall sconces or place lamps on tables to illuminate the area at night. Hang gauzy white or natural fiber drapes or bamboo blinds along the screen to control the amount of sunlight entering the space.
