Painting Laminate Furniture Black

Laminate furniture may look like wood, but it is actually a conglomeration of materials, sometimes including wood, pressed into a flat, board-like shape and used to build anything from beds to dressers to desks. While laminate is inexpensive, it can be an eyesore, particularly its easily identifiable shiny surface. However, you can paint it, transforming it into something you're proud to have in your home without compromising the durability of the material.

Instructions

    • 1

Spray the piece of laminate furniture with an all-purpose cleansing spray. Wipe it down with soft cloths. Remove all hardware from the furniture with a screwdriver.

    • 2

Attach a piece of 200-grit sandpaper to the bottom of an electric sander. Run the sander across the surface of the furniture until the top layer of laminate starts to peel off. Once that begins, don't sand further. Wipe down the furniture with a cloth dampened in paint thinner to remove the dust from sanding.

    • 3

Put on a vapor mask and spray the furniture with a primer designed for laminate. Allow it to dry according to the instructions on the primer can. This can range from overnight to seven days.

    • 4

Spray the furniture with an even coat of black satin paint. Move the can of spray paint evenly back and forth, covering it uniformly. Allow it to dry overnight and then sand it with 400-grit sandpaper. Wipe it down with a tack cloth and apply a final coat of spray paint.
