How to Fill a Big Blank Wall in the Living Room

A large area of blank wall is not only wasted space, it can also make a room feel cold and unwelcoming -- the exact opposite of how a living room should feel. Filling this large, blank space will instantly transform your living room. Consider spacing, the size of your wall art and groupings to balance and fill the space. You can even make your own wall art to ensure a totally unique item of decor.

Instructions

    • 1

Display a collection of photographs in frames. Create a sleek, modern look by using identical frames placed in a long line to create the effect of an invisible picture rail. For a more eclectic, funky effect, gather a selection of frames in different shapes and sizes and place them in random groupings on the wall.

    • 2

Frame motivational posters and uplifting images taken from magazines. Alternatively, hang framed pictures or canvas wall art to brighten the space and create visual interest.

    • 3

Attach small floating shelves or box shelves to the wall at different heights. Place a single item on each shelf. From small potted plants to individual figurines or a single fake flower in a vase, choose something that complements the rest of the decor in the room.

    • 4

Display a selection of masks. Carved African-style masks will create a well-traveled, ethnic feel. Masquerade-style masks offer a sophisticated, elegant feel.

    • 5

Group a selection of mirrors of different sizes and shapes together on the wall. This will create a feeling of light and space, and placing something pretty on the opposite wall ensures a pleasant reflection in the mirrors.

    • 6

Use wall tiles to create an interesting piece of modern art. Place four tiles together in groups to form squares on the wall, or scatter the tiles in a less uniform manner. The different finish of the tiles compared to the wall will create a feeling of texture.

    • 7

Display old plates on the wall. If you don't have a selection of interestingly detailed tableware to display on the wall, search for plain white plates at flea markets or thrift stores and paint them yourself.

    • 8

Display old records or record sleeves for a slightly retro vibe. Again, if you don't have any records lying around, search for second-hand bargains.

    • 9

Attach a curtain rail to the very top of the wall and hang fabric from it, just as you would curtains. Depending on the length of the wall, use several curtain rails with a gap of around 12 inches in between each one to create a set of fabric wall panels.

    • 10

Add a self-adhesive full wall mural to cover the entire wall and transform the whole feel of the room. Alternatively, a smaller mural such as creeping vines up one side of the wall allows you to implement some other ideas on the rest of the wall.

Create your own bespoke artwork by painting simple, random patterns on a large canvas. On very large walls, use two or three pieces of framed canvas and spread the design over all of them.
