How to Decorate Narrow Entry Hallways

A long, narrow entry hallway onto which the rooms of your home open does not have to be an intimidating space to decorate. Because this is the area that introduces guests to individual rooms, decorate it creatively to form a lasting impression. Appropriate paint colors, clever furniture selection and placement, and dramatic lighting work together to transform the limited corridor into a warm and inviting space. Add color and depth and to the space with decor elements that reflect your personal style.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the walls of the hallway a neutral or pastel shade to create the illusion of space and height. Avoid darker shades that draw attention to the limited space. Paint the ceiling a shade or two lighter than the walls to draw the eye upward. Let the paint dry for 48 hours or longer.

    • 2

Spread a narrow runner on the floor to conceal an unattractive flooring material or protect the wood or tiled surface. Ensure the color of the runner blends with the design of the hallway to create a harmonious and cohesive style.

    • 3

Push a closed shelving unit or narrow table against the wall to provide room for collectibles or decorative objects. Mount a horizontal mirror above the unit to add depth to the space.

    • 4

Place a low-profile chair or narrow bench in the hallway to provide seating. Position a tall or arched floor lamp next to the seating arrangement to create a reading nook. Ensure the placement of the furniture does not restrict movement or prevent comfortable passage from one end of the hallway to the other.

    • 5

Display family photos or attractive prints on a wall to capture visitors’ attention as they walk down the narrow hallway. Depending on personal preference, arrange the framed photos in a horizontal line along the wall, keeping their lower ends in line with each other, or stagger the arrangement down the hallway.

Hang lightweight, gauzy curtains on the window in the hallway to provide privacy without blocking out natural light. Illuminate the long, narrow hallway with small wall sconces to provide safe passage at night. Place a tall potted plant at each corner of the hallway for natural color.
