How to Decorate a Basement With Sheets

Having a basement increases the square footage in your home. It can be used for such purposes as an office, a guest bedroom or an extra family room. If you don't have the budget for a full renovation of your basement, use cost-friendly decorating solutions to make the space usable. Ordinary bed sheets are an affordable and versatile decorating solution.

Instructions

Mount sheets on the wall to create the look of wallpaper that is easy to remove. If the wall is drywall or plaster, hang the sheets by spraying both the sheets and the wall generously with fabric starch. Smooth the sheets in place to remove air bubbles and let the starch dry. If the wall is wood or concrete, mount in place with a hot glue or liquid nails.

Delineate areas in the room with curtains made of bed sheets. The basement is often home to unsightly appliances, such as the water heater or washer and dryer. Install curtain rods to cover this area, then hang sheets on the rod using curtain clips.

Cover dull furniture with fresh and vibrant bed sheets. When it comes to furnishing your home, basements are typically a low priority. If you have worn or dated pieces in this space, cover them up with bed sheets. Tuck the excess material into corners of chairs or underneath cushions. To permanently secure the fabric in place, staple the bed sheets to the underside of the furniture frame directly with a staple gun.

Create curtains to cover any basement windows. Thick fabrics will help insulate the space and make it more usable in cooler months. To create curtains, simply fold one edge of the bed sheet under by approximately 3 inches. Sew along the edge to create a pocket through which the curtain rod can slide. Do not sew the sides of the pocket closed. Hot glue decorative trim or piping along the edges to add interest.
