Add contrast to your den by implementing other hues such as deep reds or light oranges. If cooler colors are more your style, opt for light greens or mellow blues. These colors may be added in the form of accessories, baseboard color and window treatments. Because a den is a place of study, avoid energetic hues such as bold yellows and electric blues.
Play up your windows. In a room with brown furniture and paneling, a window extends the space and lets in plenty of natural light to open the room up. It also reduces energy costs as natural light may be used when reading or studying. White window treatments such as blinds and curtains will prevent the room from feeling closed-in.
Implement neutral accents. Choose desk organizers, mouse pads or bookcases in white, beige, taupe or cream to complement the furniture while also brightening the room.
Paint the ceiling white to make it feel higher. Tall, narrow photo frames and floor-to-ceiling drapes also elongate the height of a room by drawing the eye up.
Add bright plants in contrasting colors such as warm reds and yellows or light blues and vibrant greens. Ferns, potted flowers and even artificial trees will refresh your work space and act as natural air purifiers.
